The Blind Test Drive

THE GAUNTLET
REAR CROSS TRAFFIC ALERT
The appropriately named Gauntlet, features two 5000 lb. shipping containers swinging across the driver’s path. The goal is simple: Use the rear cross traffic sensors and the audible and visual alerts from inside the Genesis to thread his way through, in reverse, without being pulverized.

THE STOP
AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEM
The final chapter sees a large vehicle stopped directly in the path of the Genesis on a wide open stretch of road. The task for the Automatic Emergency Braking technology in this test is to not only notice the vehicle ahead, but to also stop the Genesis from hitting it. For the driver, it’s summoning the courage to keep his feet off the brakes, trusting the car’s ability to sense the road ahead and avoid a direct rear-end collision.

THE SLALOM
BLIND SPOT DETECTION SYSTEM
This test begins by doubling down on the difficulty with three massive double deckers busses driving in a staggered formation down a stretch of open road. The driver’s assignment: Weave his way through this rolling maze and come out ahead of these oversized buses. With speeds for the vehicles fluctuating between 35 to 45 MPH, the indication for unsafe or safe lane changes will come entirely from the Blind Spot alerts in the vehicle. Anything less than three crisp, clean passes could result in the Genesis touching-off a 4 vehicle pile up.

THE SPIKES
LANE KEEP ASSIST
Awaiting the Genesis in this test is a 100 yard stretch of single-lane road lined with military grade steel spikes, engineered to annihilate the tires of nearly any vehicle. The driver’s mission: Stay in his lane and clear the steel spikes by using the audio alerts and automatic steering correction of the Genesis to guide him, all while traveling at over 40 miler per hour in a lane that’s just wide enough to fit the car.
